Saranda Travel Guide — Things to Do, Beaches & Restaurants

May 17, 2026 by unq37

Saranda sits on the southern Albanian Riviera where the Ionian Sea meets the mountains. Beyond the beaches, this corner of Albania offers ancient ruins, natural springs, hilltop fortresses, and some of the freshest seafood in the Mediterranean. Here is everything worth seeing, eating, and swimming — all within easy reach of your apartment.

Things to Do in Saranda

Butrint National Park

A UNESCO World Heritage Site just 18 km south of Saranda. Butrint spans 2,500 years of history — Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Venetian ruins layered on a peninsula surrounded by a lagoon. Walk through the ancient amphitheatre, the baptistery with its intricate floor mosaics, the Lion Gate, and the Venetian tower. The surrounding wetlands are home to over 800 plant and 250 bird species.

Getting there: 25 minutes by car. Taxis from Saranda centre cost around 1,500-2,000 ALL (approximately EUR 14-18) one way. Buses also run from the Saranda bus station. Plan at least 2-3 hours for the visit.

Blue Eye Spring (Syri i Kaltër)

One of Albania’s most famous natural wonders. A karst spring where water surges from a depth of over 50 metres at a constant 10°C, creating an intense deep blue centre surrounded by electric turquoise. The spring feeds the Bistrica River and is surrounded by ancient oak and sycamore forest.

Getting there: 25 km inland from Saranda, about 30 minutes by car. Arrive before 10:00 to avoid the midday crowds. Swimming is technically prohibited in the spring itself, but the river downstream offers crystal-clear pools. Entry fee is approximately 50 ALL.

Lekuresi Castle

A 16th-century Ottoman fortress perched on the hilltop directly above Saranda. The panoramic views from the top are some of the best on the entire Riviera — Saranda bay below, Corfu across the strait, and the Ionian Sea stretching south. A restaurant operates inside the castle walls, making it a popular spot for sunset dinners.

Getting there: 5 minutes by car from Saranda centre. The road is steep but paved. You can also hike up in about 30-40 minutes from the southern end of the promenade.

Saranda Promenade

The seafront promenade curves along the entire bay and is the heart of daily life in Saranda. In the morning it is quiet — good for a run or coffee. In the evening it comes alive with families, street vendors, and the glow of restaurants. Walk the full length for views across to Corfu as the sun sets behind the island.

Ksamil

A small coastal village 15 km south of Saranda, famous for its three small islands just offshore and Caribbean-like turquoise water. The beaches are smaller and more crowded than Saranda’s, but the colour of the water is unmatched. Boat taxis run to the islands from the beach for a few hundred lek. Combine with a Butrint visit since they are on the same road.

Best Beaches Near Saranda

Mirror Beach (Pasqyra)

True to its name — calm, glass-like water reflecting the surrounding cliffs. A pebble-and-sand beach backed by olive groves, reachable by car (10 minutes south of Saranda) or by boat from the port. Less crowded than the main town beach and ideal for families.

Saranda Town Beach

Right on the promenade. Convenient but gets busy in July-August. Sunbeds and umbrellas are available from the bars along the waterfront. The water is clean and calm, protected by the bay.

Monastery Beach (Manastiri)

A quieter pebble beach at the southern end of Saranda, near the Forty Saints monastery. The water is remarkably clear here. A handful of beach bars serve drinks and simple food. Less touristy than the main beach.

Pulebardha Beach

A hidden gem accessible by boat or a rough dirt road south of Saranda. White pebbles, deep blue water, and a dramatic cliff backdrop. Bring your own supplies — there are no facilities. Best visited by booking a boat trip from Saranda port.

Kakome Bay

An isolated bay south of the Llogara Pass road, reachable only by boat from Saranda or Ksamil. Crystal water, no development, total quiet. Half-day boat excursions include stops here.

Ksamil Beaches

Multiple small beaches with the famous three islands offshore. The sand is finer here than elsewhere on the Riviera. Gets very busy in peak season — go early or visit in June or September.

Where to Eat in Saranda

Haxhi

A Saranda institution on the southern end of the promenade. Known for fresh fish — grilled whole sea bass or bream — and traditional Albanian dishes. Ask the waiter what came in that morning. Outdoor seating right on the water.

Taverna Laberia

Inland from the promenade, a family-run spot serving southern Albanian home cooking. Slow-cooked lamb, byrek (savoury pastry), and stuffed peppers. Portions are generous and prices are lower than the waterfront restaurants.

Mare Nostrum

Upscale seafood on the promenade with a focus on grilled fish, octopus, and risotto. Good wine list featuring Albanian and Greek labels. A solid choice for a special evening out.

Practical Tips

  • Currency: Albanian Lek (ALL). Many places accept euros, but the exchange rate is better at ATMs or exchange offices. Cards are accepted at most restaurants and hotels but carry cash for smaller businesses and taxis.
  • Getting around: Saranda is walkable. For day trips (Butrint, Blue Eye, Ksamil), rent a car or arrange a taxi. Daily bus services run to Gjirokastër, Tirana, and the Greek border at Kakavija.
  • Best time to visit: June and September offer warm weather, swimmable water, and fewer crowds. July-August is peak season — lively but busy. May and October are mild with very quiet beaches.
  • Water: Tap water in Saranda is safe but many locals drink bottled. Supermarkets and kiosks are everywhere.
  • Language: Albanian. English is widely spoken in the tourism area. Greek and Italian are also common.
